Peachtree 10K
This morning was the “shadow” run of Atlanta’s Peachtree 10K held here in Iraq. It was planned to be an easy jog after last night’s 15-mile run, which I finished just 7 hours before the gun went off for this race.
Purposefully seeding myself in the back of the pack, the first mile was a shuffle, since we had over 1,000 participate. By mile 2, the pack was spreading out and folks that started out too hard were already falling back. It was right about mile 2 that the legs starting moving quicker.
By mile 4, I was hungry. Even though I had a heavy feed immediately after last night’s run, I was still about 2,000 calories in the hole for yesterday. A quick Gatorade and Shot Blok pre-race this morning didn’t last. So the mid-point of the run was distracting. By mile 5, I picked up the pace and started pushing for the finish.
The final 1/2 mile was at a good clip. Still passing plenty of folks. I was worried that I’d get run over by someone who decided that they were setting a world record, but I didn’t have that happen near me. I did see plenty of that later though, as folks that were finishing at 65-70 minutes sprinted for the line. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of those folks that are out there pushing themselves, but when they do it at the risk of hurting others, I take a dim view.
Overall, a good run, especially considering how short after last night’s long run and a fairly poor night of sleep. Looking at the pace curves downloaded from my Garmin, I managed to accelerate throughout the entire run, from start to finish. The HR was a gradual rise all the way through the finish line, never actually entering Z5. Had I been racing, that last mile or so would have been deep into Z5, but that wasn’t the plan today. I’ll leave that for next week.
This is a recovery week coming up and in place of my tempo test at the end of the week, I’ll be “traveling” for another race. This time, the Boilermaker 15K, which is held in Utica, NY. That one will be a big push and likely into Z5 for the last couple of miles.
All this “traveling” is making me tired!
